Nothing prepares you for your “Third Act.”
One day you’re a “young 40-something.”
Then you wake up and now you’re 50 - and everyone knows that 50 is the “new 40” - right?
You figure you’ve still got your figure, and your looks. You can still color your hair to fool your friends - and your mirror. And since the average lifetime for women is now 85, you’ve got at least 25 or more years! Plenty of time for a new career; a new hair color, or even a new marriage.
It seems to go by so quickly though. Your kids are dating, going away to school, moving away, getting married and having kids. Now you’re a grandparent-but you’re still cool-right?? And the few words or tunes you forget must be an anomaly. Everyone slows down a little bit, don’t they? No big deal.
Except that it is a big deal.
Not as many magazines, movies or popular songs to relate to - and who are these stars, anyway?
The truth is, you can either accept the shock that accompanies growing older, or you can pretend it’s not happening. But pretty soon you must accept reality. Begin a life that makes you feel useful, productive and most importantly-joyful.
I chose the latter. I have a joyful life-even when I’m told “ok boomer.”
